Los Gatos Celebrates National Donut Day

By 10 a.m. today, the two main donut shops in town were already running low on the yummy treat.

Holiday History

National Doughnut Day is observed on the first Friday of June each year. It began as a fundraiser hosted by the Salvation Army to raise money for the needy during the Great Depression and to honor the women that served doughnuts (also spelled "donuts") to hungry soldiers during World War I. The holiday is still used as  a fundraiser for the Salvation Army today.

We thought we would get an expert list of donut places from Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police spokesman Sgt. Kerry Harris, going on the stereotype that cops like to eat the tempting deep-fried dessert, but we were wrong.

This is what he had to say: "I don't eat donuts ... The vast majority of the police officers here in Los Gatos don't eat donuts, but I'm sure there are many good donut shops in town."

Sgt. Harris was right. Here's what we found.

S K Donuts is a great place to stop by and drink something warm in the morning, whether it's coffee or hot chocolate and pair it with a yummy, delicious donut. We called this morning and the donuts were almost gone at 85 cents each. No discounts today, even during the dessert's national celebration.

Maple Leaf Donut is also another excellent donut shop that's a staple in town. Its owners are friendly and they, too, were almost sold-out today at the same price as SK Donuts, 85 cents for the sweet treats. No discounts today, however.

We then called the to get some recommendations. The caller at the end of the line didn't want to be identified but said she woudn't be eating donuts today, just fruit, trying to stay healthy. "That's one thing (donuts) I try to stay away from," she remarked.

Suggestions? If the two local donut shops run out by the time you finally get to reading this post, you may want to hit the local grocery stores such as Safeway, Whole Foods and Lunardi's, to see if they have brand-name donuts such as Dunkin' Donuts or Krispy Kreme.

By the way, if you find a Krispy Kreme or a Dunkin' Donuts location near Los Gatos, the dessert is free today.

Happy Donut Day!
