Why Go: Have your kids learn about kayaking in a way that will keep them safe when they go and try to kayak on their own. Docent Shirley Reekie will show and tell first-time kayakers all the essentials they need to know. Your child must be at least 12 and know how to swim. There are two sessions: 9-10:30 a.m., or 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Pricing: Call 408-355-2240 for price and to register.

Why Go: This is a sneak preview of Opera San Jose's performance of "Hansel and Gretel," specially aimed at children. Opera San Jose artists will present this one-act, condensed version of Engelbert Humperdinck's classic opera performed in English, by  performers in full costume. Great way to introduce your children to opera and you will enjoy it, too.

Pricing: Free with museum admission.
