Flex Alert in Effect: Save Energy Now, Ca. Agency Requests

A Flex Alert is an urgent call to Californians to immediately conserve electricity and to shift demand to off-peak hours.

By Bay City News Service:

The California Independent System Operator has issued a statewide Flex Alert for Thursday afternoon and evening, and state residents are being asked to conserve gas and electricity.

The alert was issued because of a natural gas shortage related to frigid weather in parts of the U.S. and Canada, ISO officials said.

The situation is affecting the supply of fuel to California power plants, and the generation of electricity has been reduced.

The plants affected are in Southern California, but officials with the ISO, which manages the state's power grid, said conservation is being urged statewide to free up power for that region.

Everything is a crisis. Can't anyone anticipate this sort of thing and plan for it. Must everything be on a reaction basis?
