Charles Erskine Scott Wood and Friends

Famous author, civil libertarian, soldier and attorney appears in this historical photo. C.E.S. Wood is best known as the author of the 1927 satirical bestseller, Heavenly Discourse.

Pictured at left is poet Sara Bard Field, 1882-1974, who in 1915 crossed the country by auto to deliver almost a half million signatures in support of women's suffrage to President Woodrow Wilson.

In this photo, thought to be from 1925, she is holding the arm of her future husband, C. E. S. Wood. Next to the bearded Wood is Henry Meade Bland, 1863–1931, poet laureate of California 1929-1931. Second from right is tennis champ Helen Wills Moody, 1905-1998, winner of two Olympic gold medals. Senator James Duval Phelan, 1861-1930, is at the far right; he was three-time mayor of San Francisco and built Villa Montalvo.
