5 Things You Need to Know Today, Sept. 21

Dedicate this day to your health and begin with a local workout and inspiring words tonight from a woman who lost almost half her weight.

Alvaro Fernandez, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sharp Brains will open the Friends of Los Gatos Library Friday Forum fall 2011 season at 7 p.m., Sept. 23, in the Los Gatos Town Council Chambers, 110 Main St. Fernandez is the author of the acclaimed book The Sharp Brains Guide to Brain Fitness. He teaches "The Science of Brain Health" at San Francisco State University and the UC-Berkeley Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Details: 408-399-5700.

5. The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Community Garage Sale takes place Oct. 1. On Sunday, Oct. 2, the Town of Los Gatos and will hold its annual Second Chance Day Donation Drive at the Adult Recreation Center, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., to encourage sellers to give away unsold items for local shelters and nonprofit organizations.
