5 Things You Need to Know Today, Sept. 16

Come cheer on the Wildcats in their home opener game tonight.

1. The Los Gatos High School football team hosts Oak Grove High tonight, Friday at Los Gatos High. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The juicy non-league matchup of perennial Central Coast Section contenders is one of three marquee games tonight. Defending state champion Palo Alto High will play Archbishop Mitty Prep-San Jose and St. Francis High-Mountain View will host Willow Glen High. The Wildcats topped Menlo-Atherton High 27-14 on Saturday. Los Gatos will look for a second straight win in the home opener. Tickets are $8. Details: 408-354-2730.

2. Enjoy the beautiful outdoors Saturday morning 9 a.m.-noon, Sept. 17, and serve your community. The Creek Connections Action Group is looking for volunteers for its state Coastal Cleanup Day. Would-be volunteers can find a map of local cleanup sites at www.cleanacreek.org. Locally, volunteers will work picking up garbage in Los Gatos Creek at Vasona Park, from Roberts Road to Lark Avenue. 3. Festival Theatre Ensemble, the producers of the presents Broadcast: Murder, a mystery play in four acts, 6:30-10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Toll House Hotel, 140 So. Santa Cruz Ave. The performance is a fundraiser for the 2012 season of the Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival, an annual event held for the past 10 years at Los Gatos' Oak Meadow Park. 4. The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Foundation's fundraiser, "A Taste of Los Gatos" will be held 3-6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18 at the McCarthy Family Estate Vineyard, 20108 Foster Rd. Join the foundation with a donation of $500 and receive two tickets to the year. If you do not want to join the foundation but would like to attend, tickets are $150 each. 5. Los Gatos Poet Laureate Parthenia M. Hicks is calling for poems about Los Gatos through Oct. 25. Send your submissions to Los Gatos Poet Laureate, P.O. Box 790, Los Gatos, CA 95031, or email them to parre1@verizon.net. Guidelines indicate one poem per person can be submitted, poets don't have to live in Los Gatos, poems must be double-spaced, double-sided, no longer than three pages and have the poet's name and contact information. A selection of poems will be posted on the Los Gatos Poet Laureate Facebook page, the Los Gatos Library Poet Laureate page, in the Los Gatos library on a bulletin board reserved for this honor, collect them for possible inclusion in a book to be released in April 2012 as part of the celebration of April as National Poetry Month.
