5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 9

Don't miss today's Los Gatos Library summer reading kick-off celebration on the Civic Center Lawn.

1. Los Gatos Library summer reading kick off celebration today, 3:30-5 p.m.,Thursday, June 9, on the Los Gatos Civic Center Lawn. Enjoy world music presented by the Los Gatos DJ Company, learn about the businesses participating in summer reading, and get signed up for this fun- filled summer adventure. This event is open to children of all ages. Details:  408-354-6891. 

2. Every Thursday, 10 a.m. to 12:30 noon, at the Los Gatos Adult Recreation Center, 208 E. Main St., seniors 55 and older can take charge of their well-being by receiving blood pressure screening. From 11:15 a.m. to 12 noon they can participate in a Sit & Be Fit Class, and from 12-12:30 p.m. they can enjoy a healthy sandwich or salad and enjoy that day’s guest speaker discussing a current health or safety related topic. 4. Plan to get up early tomorrow so you won't be late! Join Los Gatos resident Brad Armstrong, co-owner of the Willow Glen Athletic Performance store, for a free hilly trail run at 6:30 a.m. every Friday. 1. The 5K Lemon Loop Walk to raise money for childhood cancer research takes place Saturday morning, June 11, on the track of Saratoga High School, 20300 Herriman Ave. Participants will also enjoy music, face-painting and a magician! On-site registration available with entertainment starting at 8:30 a.m. and the walk starting at 9 a.m. The walk is sponsored by Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a national nonprofit organization started by Alexandra, a 4-year old cancer patient who opened a lemonade stand because "Alex" wanted to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. She lived four more years.  The organization, in its 11th year, has raised $40 million for childhood cancer research and a travel-to-treatment program for the children's families. Details: 610-649-3034.
