5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 29

Don't miss the second Jazz on the Plazz free concert tonight at Town Plaza.

1.  Start your day right with exercise by joining , first-place winner of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Boston Marathon in the 50+ age group, and co-owner of  in Los Gatos. Christine leads this free beginners running workout at 7 a.m. every Wednesday. The group meets in front of the store at 55 W. Main St., rain, hail or shine, for the workout on Los Gatos Creek Trail. 2. Free showing of the classic film The Long Gray Line at 1 p.m., today, Wednesday, June 29, at the , 208 E. Main St. Director John Ford’s love of military institutions and their hard-working men shines through in this true story of Martin Maher, who spent decades at West Point and was honored as Master of the Sword. Tyrone Power stars with Ford stock company regulars Maureen O’Hara, Ward Bond, Donald Crisp and Harry Carey Jr. Details: 408-354-1514.

3. Make plans to attend 55 Plus program's USO Dance 7-9 p.m., Friday, July 1 at the Los Gatos Recreation Center, 208 E. Main St. The dance will feature the 10th Avenue Band, which will pay homage to the post WWII era with music ranging from big band, swing and more. Anyone wearing a uniform or that has a military ID will receive a door prize! Light desserts and refreshments will be provided. The event is co-sponsored by the Lions Club of Los Gatos. 4. Enjoy the second concert tonight, Wednesday, June 29, 6:30-8:30 p.m., featuring singer/songwriter Pamela Rose. The Wednesday concerts are free and continue through Aug. 24 at Town Plaza, at the intersection of West Main Street and Santa Cruz Avenue near the post office. Details: Teri Hope, 408-354-1155.

5. Summer photo contest! Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman, a Los Gatos resident and the former mayor of our town, is sponsoring a photo contest this summer. Send your favorite image that represents summer in Santa Clara County District 1. It can be anything from kids eating ice cream at Vasona Lake County Park, families boating at Anderson Lake, a barbeque in your neighborhood, a farmers market, or your favorite trail. Be sure that whatever you choose shows off the distinct flavor of our community. Wasserman will frame and proudly display the winning photos in his office. Three winning photos will be picked with no separate categories, just the theme: summertime. Get moving, get creative, and show the supervisor what your summer in Santa Clara County looks like!
