5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 24

Don't miss tonight's fundraiser for the Youth Science Institute in San Jose.

1. The Los Gatos-based Youth Science Institute is having a fundraiser tonight, Friday, June 24, 5-7:30 p.m., at Joseph George Wines, 1559 Meridian Ave., in San Jose. The gourmet wine- and food-tasting party will feature rare, small-production Napa Valley wines hand-selected and poured by Bert George, owner of Joseph George Wines. Hors-d’oeuvres by Blue Sage Catering will also be provided. George will educate guests on the science of wine. All ticket sales and proceeds from the live auction, and a percentage of the wine sales, go to the YSI’s hands-on science programs. Tickets are $75. 2. Make plans to attend the fourth Vasona Vibrations free outdoor music concert tomorrow, Saturday, June 25 at Vasona Lake County Park, 5-7 p.m. Food and cash donations for Second Harvest Food Bank will be accepted at each concert, according to the event's Web site. The Golden State Ramblers will be performing. Details: 408-354-2608.

3. Join Los Gatos resident Brad Armstrong, co-owner of the Willow Glen Athletic Performance store, for a free hilly trail run at 6:30 a.m. every Friday. The group meets at the Athletic Club next to rain, hail or shine. Not for beginners. Questions: 408-354-7365 or 408-297-0100.

4. Apply today for vacancies the town has on theLos Gatos Planning Commission and the Los Gatos General Plan Committee. The deadline to apply is July 22, 2011. Applications can be submitted online or in person at the Town Clerk Department, 110 E. Main St. Candidates will be interviewed by the Los Gatos Town Council. Details: 408-354-6834.

Share your thoughts about public spaces and architectural styles for the future development of the . Complete an online survey letting town planners know what your preferences are for the land bounded by Los Gatos Boulevard to the east, Highway 85 to the north, Lark Avenue to the south and Highway 17 to the west.
