5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 21

Don't miss today's burial of a time capsule by town officials near the entryway of the new Los Gatos Library at 10 a.m.

1. Apply today for vacancies the town has on theLos Gatos Planning Commission and the Los Gatos General Plan Committee. The deadline to apply is July 22, 2011. Applications can be submitted online or in person at the Town Clerk Department, 110 E. Main St. Candidates will be interviewed by the Los Gatos Town Council. Details: 408-354-6834.  

2. Make plans today to join the Friends of the Los Gatos Library this afternoon, June 21, 5-8 p.m., for a fun-filled evening preview of the  115 No. Santa Cruz Ave. Event will benefit the organization's Once in a Generation campaign for the new Los Gatos Public Library. Suggested donation is $20. 3. The capsule will be filled with current memorabilia. A commemorative plaque will identify the spot where the device will be buried and its marker will be dated Aug. 10, 2087, the date of the town's bicentennial anniversary and the capsule's opening date. Details: Pamela Jacobs, 408-354-6832.

4. Plan to get up early so you won't be late! Join Los Gatos resident Brad Armstrong, co-owner of the Willow Glen Athletic Performance store, at 6:15 a.m. every Tuesday for a free track workout that includes combinations of 400- and 800-meter repeats and one-mile distances. The group meets at the track rain, hail or shine. Details: 408-354-7365 or 408-297-0100. 

5. Cool off tomorrow Wednesday, June 22, by attending the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center family Float Night and Barbecue, 5-8 p.m., 14855 Oka Road. The public is welcome to bring flotations devices, except water wings.  DJ Aaron David will lead a dance party on the field. Tickets are $5 for center members and $8 for non-members.
