5 Things You Need to Know Today, Dec. 4

Check out the mah jongg tourney this morning at the Jewish Community Center.

1. The Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley are co-sponsoring a mah jongg tournament at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 4, 14855 Oka Rd., Suite 201. This is a two-tiered tournament with maven and novice levels. A delicious lunch will be served. Come alone or sign up with your Mah Jongg group! The tournament includes prizes for both levels and this year will also benefit a local charitable program. Entry fee: $54. 2. Writer Tom Fields-Meyer presents a lecture titled, "Following Ezra: What One Father Learned About Gumby, Otters, Autism, and Love from His Extraordinary Son," at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 5 in the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center lounge, 14855 Oka Rd. 3. The baseball season may be over, but the San Jose Wind Symphony just can’t wait until next year! Join the group at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 4, at the McAfee Performing Arts Center, 20300 Herriman Ave., Saratoga, as it celebrates America’s favorite pastime. 4. is looking for school parent volunteers for its Hicklebee's Book Fair, Dec. 6-8. Those interested should sign up on Jooners. BHES parents can also stop by the school library and see Tami Graves. School is looking for BHES helpers before, during and after the fair. You can help get the Book Fair ready and help children shop for great books. Details: 408-335-2100.

5. The , 4 Tait Ave., presents Youth Education, Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 5-6, by appointment only. Local high school and middle school classes join Kenney Mencher and Patrick Nelson (co-author of the Renovated Reputations exhibition catalogue) for Flash Fiction: creative writing exercises imagined from the artworks. The students will have the opportunity to submit their work in an online competition to win a drawing by Mencher. Details:
