5 Things You Need to Know Today, Aug. 31

Renovations begin today outside the Los Gatos Adult Recreation Center.

1. The Town of Los Gatos will be renovating the outside of the 208 E. Main St., beginning today, Wednesday, Aug. 31 through Friday, Sept. 30. Due to the renovations, center officials are warning that classes and programs may be impacted by the construction. Details: Recreation Supervisor Stephanie Douglas, 408-207-4916. 

2. The all-day music concert happens 2-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, during Labor Day weekend, at  The free event is sponsored by the  and raises funds for the A portion of the proceeds from the food, wine and beer concessions as well as the raffle will go to support the cause. 3. The is inviting the public to its Labor Day Grill & Chill, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 5, at 16330 Los Gatos Blvd. The event will include food for purchase from the popular Movable Feast (SJ Eats) food trucks, live music, inflatables and a children's festival. Details: 408-356-5126.

4. View an art exhibit of 24 watercolor paintings of the Statue of Liberty by local artist Laurie Barna, participate in a community art project, and use an interactive map to trace your family's journey to the United States beginning Thursday, Sept. 1 through Oct. 25 at the , 14855 Oka Rd. Then on Sunday, Sept. 11, the public is invited to a reception commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and honoring the 125th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty 1-4 p.m., at the APJCC, 14855 Oka Rd. Refreshments will be served during the artist's reception on Sept. 11. 5. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region is urging immediate blood and platelet donations. The need has risen due to the cancellation of more than 72 blood drives along the East Coast, resulting in the shortfall of more than 2,400 units of blood. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or go to redcrossblood.org. Eligible platelet donors should call 1-888-881-0988.
