1896 Austrian Gulch

By 1934, all evidence of this German colony had disappeared.

Three men pose for a photograph at Austrian Gulch in 1896. The young man on the left is wearing an Austrian-style hat. The German colony was located across Los Gatos Creek from Wrights Station. Austrian and German refugees from the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71 planted vineyards and built a community winery in the center of the 1, 000-acre settlement. By 1934, all evidence of the colony had disappeared.
