1883 Election Day in Los Gatos
The 'dry movement' was alive and well in town more than 130 years ago.
Prohibition supporters are included in the election-day crowd gathered at Oak Street (Montebello Way) and Main Street.
Fred W. Crandall (1858-1941) stands with his wife Josephine at the right, holding a petition in support of a "dry" Los Gatos.
The tall building at right, the "Wilcox House" housed the Commercial Bank until it burned down in the great fire of 1901.
The Rankin Block was built on this site in 1904, and still stands today.
Fred Crandall and his partner, W. F. Rice, owned the "Big Orchard Drying Establishment" contracted every year to dry tons of prunes.
