Community-Wide Yellow Comforter Project Celebrates Completion of Effort to Raise Funds to Feed the Hungry

The second annual “Yellow Comforter Project,” organized by PJ Library® , a program of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, in collaboration with area Jewish schools and synagogues will celebrate a “tzedakah” [philanthropy] project which engages elementary school children in an effort to collect money to benefit local, national and worldwide food programs for families in need.

The community is invited to participate in this celebration, which takes place on Sunday, February 9, 2014, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm in the lobby of the Levy Family Campus (14855 Oka Road, Los Gatos). All ages are welcome to help build a school, a synagogue, and a home out of cans and boxes as an example of the food that will be purchased with the monies collected.  The structures will be built according to designs contributed by local architect Helena Barrios Vincent of HBVArchitecture and designers Dan and Aaron Winklebleck of Cornerstone Limited Remodeling Design Professionals, Inc.  Realtor Carol Jeans of Sereno Group completes the triad of industry professionals in support of the project.

There will be additional fun philanthropy projects and an early supper. The event is open to the entire community. A donation of $10 per family is requested for the “spaghetti feed” dinner. RSVPs and more information at www.jvalley.org.

The project developed from a PJ Library storybook, “How Dahlia Put a Big Yellow Comforter in a Tiny Blue Box,” in which a girl shows her brother how saving money in a special Tzedakah (philanthropy)  Box can be turned into comforting gifts for a lonely woman in her neighborhood.

Proceeds from this project will be donated to the Jewish Family Service of Silicon Valley, the Second Harvest Food Bank, Mazon (a Jewish Response to Hunger program), and a program in Israel which plants crops that the poor can harvest according to their needs.
