Kiwanis Donates More to New Library Than Lions, Rotary

First, the Rotary donated $25,000 to help furnish the new library, then Lions gave $25,001. On Saturday, the Kiwanis Club offered $25,025 to claim bragging rights ... for now.

In a ceremony Saturday at the Fiesta de Artes art and wine festival, the Kiwanis Club of Los Gatos presented the Friends of the Los Gatos Public Library with a ceremonial check in the amount of $25,025.

"You, the Kiwanis Club, has beaten both the Rotary and the Lions," declared Friends Community Gifts Co-Chair Kristina Strand, to wild cheering from the gathered Kiwanians. Kiwanis president Bart Raynaud presented the oversized check to Friends Board Chair Carol Hamilton as several Kiwanis members—Tim Coughlin, MarLyn Rasmussen, Bob Jones and others—looked on.

The Friends of the Library have raised 71.9 percent of their goal of $2.1 million, or $1,509,147, Strand said. The new library is scheduled to open in early 2012, and the money raised by the Friends will go toward furnishings and equipment.
