'Safe Routes to School' Policies Discussed
Officials meeting this week to develop and implement healthy transportation options for students.
The Santa Clara County Public Health Department is hosting events over the next three days to help develop and implement healthy transportation options for students, SCCPH spokeswoman Amy Cornell said.
National transportation experts, community members and local officials are participating in the events, which began Monday afternoon with a "walkabout" at a San Jose elementary school.
The events conclude on Wednesday, when participants will look toward the future and how to give kids more options for getting to and from school safely.
"Safe Routes to School" is a national program that promotes walking and bicycling to school in a safe and supportive environment, according to the public health department.
Monday's walkabout was followed by an audit to see how students are getting to school, Cornell said.
There will be a workshop at 1400 Parkmoor Ave. in San Jose from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday to develop policy change recommendations, and a breakfast on Wednesday morning at which local elected and school officials will discuss recommendations.
