Operation Yellow Ribbon Remembers Service Members During Holidays
Los Gatos-based organization visits Fisher House and Polytrauma Center in Palo Alto last Friday and Housing Consortium Saturday.
This past weekend was a busy one for Operation Yellow Ribbon, an organization under the auspices of the afternoon Los Gatos Rotary Club.
Under the leadership of its chairman, Michael Frangadakis, the nonprofit group visited the Fisher House and the Polytrauma Center in Palo Alto last Friday giving wounded soldiers and their families gift certificates and presents.
The Fisher House families, housed in 21 rooms, also received a complete set of pots and pans including glass ware for their kitchen, Frangadakis said.
"We make sure everyone has a good Christmas and we provide $50 gift certificates from Target and a Christmas card of appreciation," Frangadakis said.
At the Trauma Center, Operation Yellow Ribbon also presented a banner signed by many delegates. The soldiers have all suffered serious injuries such as brain and spinal cord trauma or loss of limbs and eyes, he said.
One wounded veteran cheered up by the group was an unidentified Modesto soldier who has earned a Purple Heart for his bravery in combat. The soldier recently married at the hospital and wasn't able to go on a honeymoon.
The high school sweethearts, however, will be sent to Hawaii courtesy of Operation Yellow Ribbon, Frangadakis said.
Operation Yellow Ribbon also provided Christmas for six families from the Emergency Housing Consortium in San Jose on Saturday.
Frangadakis, who's Santa Claus for the club, dressed in his red-and-white suit and was happy to provide some holiday cheer to the less fortunate families.
Operation Yellow Ribbon is funded by the LG Rotary Community Relations Board and private donations of citizens helping the military, Frangadakis said.

Thank you for the great article on the Los Gatos Rotary and the good work being performed by Operation Yellow Ribbon. I was delighted to learn of the contributions Mike Frangadakis and his team have made to our very deserving veterans.
I am involved in a different effort known as the Steak Team Mission. The Steak Team Mission consists of volunteers who travel to bases around the world to deliver, grill and serve steak dinners Texas style to our very deserving service members. Our mission: send a message of gratitude to the very deserving men and women who defend America's freedom.
Your website suggested that we tell you about our holidays. Shortly before Thanksgiving, eleven of us traveled to the Persian Gulf and served 4500 steak dinners to Navy sailors aboard the USS Bush who had been out at sea for six months. We were 30 miles off the coast of Iran.
In October, we served dinners to 1000 Wounded Warriors at Fort Sam Houston, the largest military burn center in the U.S. Other 2011 missions included serving 2000 dinners to Marines in six stations in Afghanistan or about as far from the flag as one could get. For several Marines, this was the first warm meal in over 90 days. We served 1000 in Honduras on Super Bowl Sunday and 1000 in Korea in August.
I invite you to learn about Steak Team. Here are videos I created from recent visits:
