The Lions Club has realized how serious bullying is and its long-term effects on victims, which can often lead to suicide.

And though there’s a recent growing awareness about bullying, Lion 2nd Vice President Mike Moresco says it’s not a new occurrence.

“I think it has always been a problem,” Moresco said. “And with the advent of texting, Facebook, etc., it has been growing. And with all the national publicity linking bullying as a possible cause for teen suicide, people are slowly becoming more aware of the issue.”

Lion Dave Burt adds, “Cyber bullying has ... made it much easier for the bullies to broaden their impact in a much shorter time frame. Bullying has also seen an increase in recent years as a result of more disconnect between parent and child. Economics require more families to have dual professions and less ‘quality time’ with kids: time spent learning values and codes of conduct.”

Burt noted that bullying was previously accepted because no one knew how to deal with it.

“Today there are proven education and prevention methods that, when successfully implemented, have profound results in diminishing bullying cultures at schools,” he said.

But the programs cost money to implement, and schools these days are woefully low on funds.

That’s where fundraisers such as Date Night come in, allowing the Lions Club to work with our schools and parents to provide a safer environment for our children. Besides anti-bullying programs, the Lions club youth charities also provide funding for teenage suicide prevention programs and youth access to licensed, supervised therapists.

At the event, several local youth agencies will be present to provide informational material.

So get your date-night duds on, come out for a fabulous evening and support the wonderful work of the Lions Club youth charities.
