- Trick-or-treat while it is still light outside.
- Wear a costume that makes it easier for you to walk and be visible.
- If you do trick-or-treat at night, wear a costume of a lighter color that is more easily visible.
- Carry a flashlight.
- If your costume includes a mask, be sure to take off your mask while crossing the street.
- Consider wearing makeup instead of a mask.
- Ask your parents or other grown-ups to trick-or-treat with you, or go in groups.
- Consider using reflective tape to make yourself more visible at night.
- Cross only at intersections or crosswalks - NEVER cross behind vehicles.
- Plan your trick-or-treat route beforehand.
- Select costumes, masks, wigs or beards that are flame-retardant.
- Keep flammable decorations away from open flames like candles, pumpkin lights, etc.
- Wait until you get home before eating any candy, so your parents can check it first.
- Avoid lightweight, cotton fabrics and costumes with loose, baggy sleeves.
