First Los Gatos Baby of 2011

Newborn Payton Hahn arrived late New Year's morning at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Katie and Jeff Hahn hadn't planned on their daughter being the first Los Gatos 2011 baby—it just turned out that way.

"When we came in, there was no one [else] here," said Jeff. The couple had a C-section appointment at 11 a.m., but they assumed there would be other babies arriving before theirs.

Payton Hahn was born at 11:28 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 1, weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and measuring 19 inches.

It was not the first time Katie, a 28-year-old human resources employee, and Jeff, a 29-year-old engineer, had come to Good Samaritan Hospital to have a baby. Their other daughter was also delivered at the hospital more than two years ago.

"We had such a good experience last time," said Katie. Even after the couple moved from San Jose to Gilroy, they knew they wanted to return to Good Samaritan for Payton.

"The staff know what they're doing," she added. "You never feel like you're going to go crazy ... they explain things thoroughly."

The hospital's new Center for Women and Babies is only 5 years old—and both staff and families benefit from the upgrades.

New moms and dads are provided with "a completely private birth experience," said Leslie Kelsay, the hospital's vice president of marketing and communications. "Aside from aesthetics," she added, "[one can also expect] the highest level of neo-natal services available."

Patients are accommodated in private rooms and have the option to use "in-room dining," in other words, room service, Kelsay said. Rather than be given a set menu at a set time, patients can order at their convenience, she said.

The Hahns explained that many people expect hospital food to be dull or unappealing, but, "It's not like that at all [here]," said Katie.

Although they knew Payton's gender ahead of time and were prepared, they didn't expect she would become the first baby of 2011.

"Of course, it crosses your mind," said Jeff, smiling.

"It's kind of cheating," admited Katie, in reference to her Caesarean section. "We weren't trying [for the title]. It just happened."

But they joke about not having had Payton on Dec. 31, 2010. Said Jeff after describing how several people have commented on the missed opportunity for a potential tax break—"Even the pediatrician brought it up!"
