With the 2012 presidential election campaigns well underway, candidates for other political offices have begun to emerge, too.

Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-Palo Alto) announced in a press release Monday that she plans to run for a sixth term and hopes to be reelected in the newly drawn 18th congressional district.

Eshoo has been representing the 14th congressional district, which includes Mountain View.

"While the redistricting process shifted some cities out of this district that I have represented for decades and added new ones, my work has always had its roots in our regional strengths and needs, and those will not change," she said.

On Aug. 15, the California Citizens Redistricting Commission released final electoral maps for the 2012 campaigns. Before, as part of District 14, Eshoo represented cities in San Mateo and northern Santa Clara counties.

If elected to represent the 18th district, Eshoo's district would include Redwood City, Woodside, Portola Valley, Atherton, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills to Pescadero, Swanton and Scotts Valley, and Campbell, Los Gatos, Saratoga and Monte Sereno and new neighborhoods in San Jose.

Many of the towns that are being usurped by the new 18th congressional district are represented by Congressman Mike Honda in the 15th congressional district.

Eshoo serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is a ranking member of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, which has primary jurisdiction over the Internet and telecommunications.
