BASEBALL: Los Altos Edges Los Gatos in CCS Quarters

Wiechec complete game pushes Eagles into next week’s CCS semifinals.

The Score: Los Altos 2, Los Gatos 1

Los Altos High junior Luke Wiechec pitched a complete game and nearly came away with a shutout as the Los Altos baseball team defeated Los Gatos High 2-1 in a Central Coast Section Division II quarterfinal playoff Saturday afternoon at PAL field in San Jose.

A solo home run from Los Gatos senior third baseman Hayden Hibberd that sailed over the fence in left was the lone blemish during the wire-to-wire effort by the Los Altos hurler.

Simon Rosenbaum doubled early on in the game and later scored off an infield error to give Los Altos a 1-0 advantage.

Rosenbaum tacked on an RBI single in the sixth inning to double the Eagles advantage to 2-0 going into the final inning of play.

Hibberd sliced the lead in half late, but Los Gatos (21-9-2) couldn’t finish off the late rally as Los Altos held on to advance to next Thursday’s semifinal round.

Santa Clara University-bound infielder Tyler Olivet had two hits for the ‘Cats on the day and was also called out on a close play at the plate in the early innings.

Los Altos will square off against Pioneer High at San Jose Municipal Stadium in San Jose. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm.
